Position Overview
The Learning Commons in Saanich are new multi-functional spaces developed to support learning in the 21st century. While components of former libraries remain, the support for a variety of learning modalities has significantly evolved. The teacher responsible for activities in these areas will lead other teachers in multi-disciplinary approaches, inquiry based learning, and project-based learning for example, and will access current technology to support this new learning environment. The Learning Commons Teacher will have a broad curricular background and will be able to focus on the development of critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, digital literacy and creativity.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Education (Middle)
Masters Degree in Library Studies or equivalent combination of education and experience
Two years successful classroom and online experience at the middle level
Demonstrated expertise with information and communication technologies including, but not limited to, multi-media tools, smartboards, and assistive technologies
Proven evidence of teacher leadership and experience in facilitating inquiry as a model across the curriculum
Knowledge and understanding of multiple literacies and the ability to guide students as they access, manage, integrate, analyze, synthesize, evaluate and present information they get through various sources including through digital tools and the internet
Ability to excel in a flexible, multifunctional environment to facilitate learning for all members of the school community
Strong learning commons management skills which include, but are not limited to, creating and implementing procedures for selection, acquisition, organization, access to and use of learning resources; providing resources that support the curriculum and student/staff needs; and collection management
Successful completion of 'Teaching and Learning Online' course or demonstrated expertise and experience teaching in an online learning environment
Demonstrated ability in online curriculum development and delivery in accordance with the Standards for K-12 distributed learning in B.C.
Demonstrated comfort/skill in communicating in person, by telephone or online with students and parents
Must be fully conversant with current research related to the integration of technology and appropriate pedagogy for distributed learning teaching and learning
Experienced in the use of educational technologies for teaching and learning, especially course management software, asynchronous and synchronous distance delivery software
Desired Successful Experiences and Skills
Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills
Ability to collaborate with classroom teachers in the preparation, presentation and assessment of inquiry projects which utilize information resources
Promotion of literacy and the enjoyment of reading
Ability to model instructional strategies and coach staff members in the integration of technology with curriculum and other Learning Commons resources
Ability to create a supportive and enriched common learning space for inquiry, learning, collaboration and teaching
Ensuring that the Learning Commons environment is a focal point for student and staff learning
Ability to select, collect and organize materials (including digital)
Applicants who have not demonstrated education or experience in online teaching will be responsible for completing a 100-hour preparatory online course (teaching and learning online and building DL environments) that is recommended by SIDES.
