Hey Coach!
What are some common mistakes in cover letters? I’m sending some off soon and I want to avoid them.

Your cover letter is your introduction, so put your best foot forward and don’t give the recruiter any reasons to exclude you from getting an interview. The most common mistakes found in cover letters are:

  • Typos, mistakes and poor sentence structure. It doesn’t hurt to run your letter by a friend or family member.
  • Too much information. For instance, don’t include your requirements when it comes to salary, specific geographic location or job titles. Thee kinds of details may sabotage your efforts to get an interview.
  • Too much about you. If your letter is full of "I", for example, "I did this, I did that, I am this…" it gets pretty annoying for the reader. Remember to talk about the company and how you can help it achieve success.

A good cover letter should be compelling and help get you an interview. Anything else you want to say, you can bring up at the interview but the main point is to get an interview. Don’t give the recruiter any reason to toss your application out. Good luck! jp
