Job Function:

Operate and maintain the schools Learning Commons, including collection management, circulation, cataloguing functions and library technology. Make presentations to large and small groups or staff, students, and parents as required. Work collaboratively with staff to deliver 21st-century learning experiences. Job Description:

1.Establish and manage a competent system of administration for the Learning Commons that provides for efficient circulation procedures and effective use of space, time and materials.

2.Assist staff and students in the use of a range of information sources including print and computer databases and provide guidance in locating materials. Support the development of library skills and competencies in many areas, including the gathering, analysis, and evaluation of information. Promote digital citizenship in the learning commons environment which will continue to promote intellectual freedom and responsibilities.

3.Foster a love of reading and life-long learning by encouraging an interest, and understanding in the use of books and other resources.

4.Display, promote and compile learning materials and bibliographic sources to support and supplement curriculum programmes. Provide support, resources, and opportunities for transferability of learning to support broad exploration and inquiry that leads to deeper learning.

5.Create bulletin boards and displays to promote reading and the use of Learning Commons including the use of social media for promotion.

6.Inform staff of recommended Learning Commons procedures and materials available. Promote and facilitate the use of quality print and digital learning resources in multiple formats that are reviewed to ensure they address a diverse range of student learning and developmental needs.

7.Provide multi-space learning areas that support inquiry, play, and imagination in consultation with the school principal.

8.Classify and catalogue learning resources and maintain catalogue and inventory, applying technological advances in accordance with established Board procedures. This includes both English and French language material.

9.Purchase materials according to identified needs, staff recommendations, and budget allotment; unpack and verify on arrival (books, periodicals, library software/hardware technology etc.)

10.Establish the operation and maintenance of lending, renewing, reserving and recalling system for materials and equipment; institute follow-up procedures on overdue material; shelve and/or file returned materials.

11.Maintain an inventory and develop a system of control of all library software/hardware technology ensuring equipment is properly maintained and adequately charged daily. Arrange for servicing of library technology where applicable.

12.Consult with the school principal to update and maintain the schools Technology Plan as it applies to the Learning Commons.

13. Process materials; i.e., install security strips, affix bar codes, spine labels, school identification, and covering; remove from circulation unused, outdated and irreparable materials.

14.Make minor repairs to learning materials; correct minor photocopier and computer software/hardware problems.

15.Make presentations to large and small groups of staff, students or parents as required.

16.Monitor attendance and conduct of students in the Learning Commons.

17.Assist with the supervision of in-school and out-of-school student activities including regular supervision duties.

18.Provide coverage for school office as needed.

19.Collect and process monies according to established procedures.

20.Other duties as assigned. Job Requirements:

1.Requires a two year Library and Information Technician Diploma and one year related work experience.

2.Requires experience in library automation software, office productivity software (Microsoft Office), collaboration software (Google Suite for Education), Windows applications and database management; effective time management, organizational, and office management skills (i.e., electronic technology and appropriate office equipment).

3.Requires ability to operate library software/hardware technology (i.e SmartBoard, video camera, computers (Chromebooks & Netbooks), IPads, compact disc player, LCD projectors).

4.Requires a high level of oral and written communication skills to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with Board personnel, students, parents, public libraries and other Library Resource Centre staff, parish designates, community representatives, publishing companies sales representatives, outside organizations, and the general public.

5.The ability to maintain, in the strictest confidence, information received concerning any Board or School matter including, but not limited to, library utilization records.
