Dee Christensen, a 2008 honours graduate of Humber's social service worker program, has gone on to make a positive difference in the lives of countless people. At present, Dee is the editor in chief of Recovery Wire magazine, a common interest publication for people who have been impacted by addiction.
She and her team distribute their free magazine to more than 2,000 treatment centres, doctors' offices, community agencies, detoxification centres, and individual readers across the Greater Toronto Area and throughout Canada. The magazine provides readers with the inspiration to better themselves and the motivation to continue along in the recovery process.
Dee says, We have received astounding feedback on our magazine. We have been featured on Living Clean, Living Well television, and agencies across Canada are writing and calling in thanking us for building a medium that speaks to the challenges and blessings of overcoming addiction. We are quickly becoming the journalistic voice for addictions in Canada.
In reference to Recovery Wire magazine, Derek Forgie (talent co-ordinator at MTV Canada) says, One would be hard-pressed to find a hipper, slicker, unapologetically honest approach to the important issue of recovery."
Reflecting on her accomplishments, Christensen says, It is astounding to realize that what was once simply a college assignment to create a proposal for a new agency, later became the lifeblood of Recovery Wire magazine." This is a testament to the currency and relevance of our social service worker program curriculum.
The school of social & community services congratulates Dee Christensen on the positive impact her efforts in the field of social services are having in Ontario and across the country!
