Library Technician

Temporary Part Time -26 hours/week

Duties to Commence: As soon as possible until June 28, 2024

Overview:

Reporting to the Principal the Library Technician will perform tasks in collaboration to encourage and develop a collaborative learning environment utilizing the methodology and practices of Learning Commons. Learning Commons is a welcoming interactive resource room that encourages learning groups of various formats in accessing the global, interconnected and interactive communication networks of the future.

The Library Technician supports the formation of student groups to read or collaborate on an inquiry project. As our library hosts in-person and virtual book clubs, book talks and author visits, the Library Technician will take initiative and/or assist with these events. In addition, they will support students who visit the learning commons to pursue topics of their individual interest. The Library Technician will support and participate in the development of the Learning Commons; a place where students conduct independent research, as a breakout space from their regular classroom, or as a place to attend book clubs, literature circles and other literacy-based programs.

Qualifications: Completion of two-year library technician diploma or equivalent program an asset.

Excellent interpersonal skills, especially the ability to work with elementary students and students with special learning needs.

Knowledge of learning commons and the inquiry process.

Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage time and prioritize tasks, and take initiative.

Knowledgeable about virtual resources and databases that can fill the gaps in the school library collection, and direct teachers and students alike to those that address their need.

Strong knowledge of Maker Space as an interactive instructional opportunity for students.Duties: Committed to Christ-centered education values and beliefs.

Apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Mtis and Inuit for the benefit of all students, and support the Divisions goals towards advancing Truth and Reconciliation.

Process new books (catalogue, label, stamp, laminate dust jackets).

Maintain the distribution system and inventory of laptops in the library.

Check in/out books.

Assist students and faculty looking for books and virtual resources.

Assist in maintaining a friendly, welcoming learning atmosphere.

Assist in keeping an attractive physical environment.

Shelve books and shelf-read.

Expertise and involvement in creating innovation to the library service model; all aspects from room organization to serving patrons.

Active assistance in collection development, including assessment of the collection, selecting and purchasing books, and overseeing placement of materials in the library for ease of use.

Collaborate with the assistant principal and monitor in creating holiday-themed activities and incentives to promote reading.

Assist when classes come in for activities, including book selection and technology guidance.

Assist in maintaining a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment to meet the learning needs of individuals and groups.

Provide active involvement in creating and supervising special events in the Learning Commons, such as author visits, special guests, reading incentives and contests, and Book Fair.

Assist individuals or learning groups with accessing resources whether online or within the library. Ascertaining their goals, needs and provide guidance toward the direction they seek. This also may require assistance with students homework assignments.

Experience with the Macintosh platform and L4U software.

Assist with updates to library school website.

Ability to work with technology (robotics) for our Makerspace classes.

In conjunction with classroom teachers and Learning Support Facilitator, support remedial student reading interventions in individual and small group settings.

Willingness to be an active part of a vibrant school team staff, shared classroom partnership, and program.

Commitment to serve as an active and contributing member within a strong collaborative culture of the school.

Ability, training and/or experience to support instruction and programming within the context of an inclusive education environment (e.g. locating and making resources available based on teacher long-range plans).
