The Horizon School Division is seeking a Journeyman Plumber to join the Facility Services' team! The focus of the Plumber position is to manage requests from Division sites pertaining to plumbing maintenance/repairs, new installations, or modernization projects. The Job is responsible for plumbing, hot water heating, gas distribution systems, air-cooling devices, controls, and other related mechanical components. The incumbent requires a strong knowledge of the plumbing, sprinkler, and gas codes and is expected to maintain up-to-date technical knowledge through professional development activities.

Work involves procedures of a technical nature and uses hand tools and various sophisticated test equipment. The incumbent works with minimal supervision or as part of various teams in completing projects and activities. Assignments vary considerably.

The job requires a current Alberta Journeyman Plumber trades certificate along with several years of experience.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Install plumbing and heating in small new structures (e.g. portable classrooms) as well as existing structures.

Maintain operation of the mechanical components of physical plants

Carry out preventive maintenance programs with respect to the mechanical services in the schools and buildings.

Participate as a member of a project planning and design team, utilize independent judgment and input from team members.

Install, inspect, troubleshoot, service, repair, and maintain a variety of plumbing/mechanical equipment and parts.

Monitor inventory control including purchasing, receiving, shipping, and categorizing supplies, materials, and equipment.

Assist in the development of a preventive maintenance program and assessment of existing plumbing/heating systems for modernization.

Respond to notification of breakdowns, failures, or disruptions and effect restoration of service using the most efficient method to complete the work.

Evaluate and report on the performance of various products and make recommendations with respect to standardization, types and makes of equipment.

Assist in the collection of performance results with respect to mechanical equipment and parts for purchasing use.

Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report those that are not.

Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards.Building security Ensure materials and tools are safely operated and always stored.

Secure building as required depending on worksite requirements.JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Experience: High School, plus a current valid Alberta Journeyman Plumber trades certificate

Several years of recent related experience with proven troubleshooting techniques and the ability to work with minimal service information.

A thorough knowledge of plumbing, hot water heating, gas distribution systems, air cooling devices, controls, and other related mechanical components as well as a strong working knowledge of the plumbing, sprinkler, and gas codes

Good understanding of basic construction and maintenance techniques

Knowledge of the safe use of power and manual tools and equipment

Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation.

Knowledge of regulations governing Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TGD).

Knowledge of Alberta Building Code, Plumbing, Sprinkler, and Gas Codes are required.

Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business, and operations

Standard First Aid/CPR is an asset.Skills and Abilities: Ability to identify the level of repair needed and make decisions on the most efficient means of repair.

Ability to work without direct supervision.

Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and good judgment when dealing with other trades, school principals, teachers, students, co-workers, and the public.

Ability to schedule, plan task priorities, and manage several projects with conflicting demands.

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Physically able to complete the duties of the Job using appropriate tools and techniques (constantly lifting 30Kg/66lbs)
