Reporting to the Vice-Principal IP, the Multi-Cultural Worker, participates in the ongoing planning and implementing of orientation strategies/ services to facilitate the successful academic and cultural integration of international students, under the general direction of the Vice-Principal IP and in regular consultation/ liaison with students, counselors, school principals/vice-principals, English Language Learner (ELL) teachers, parents/ guardians and Home Stay families. The position is key to the timely facilitation of communications in culturally understandable language. The full job description is available on Inside45 for internal staff. Oral and written fluency in both English and Mandarin
Proven knowledge of the specific culture(s) being served and the differences from the Canadian culture
Demonstrated experience with new immigrants based on school demographics (e.g. Chinesecommunity)
Basic knowledge of the specific cultures educational system (e.g. cultural norms, course types, expectations on homework/ achievement)
Knowledge of the process of acculturation
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain rapport with students, staff, parents and community members
Excellent organizational, interpersonal and oral communication skills
Ability to work with minimal supervision
Valid B.C. Driver's license
Working knowledge of standard office procedures and equipment including personal computers and office SW OR an equivalent combination of training and experienceDesirable Qualifications and Experience:
Knowledge of School District administrative software
Basic knowledge of provincial K-12 school system and graduation requirements
Knowledge of local community support services (e.g. North Shore Multi-Cultural Society, SUCCESS, MOSAIC)
Ability to work flexible hours
Additional Languages would be an asset
