NIJI MAHKWA SCHOOL

Niji Mahkwa is a Nursery to Grade 8 school with approximately 300 students. Niji Mahkwa School fosters a strong emphasis on Indigenous language and culture. Cree and Ojibwe languages are part of the compulsory language programming. The school identifies four programming directions: academic, cultural, linguistics, and technology. These form the educational framework for teaching and learning. Niji Mahkwas priority is the advancement of the learners knowledge and skill level in English Language Arts and Mathematics, with various holistic and experiential learning activities, from the lens of Indigenous perspectives. Programming at Niji Mahkwa School is integrated into the framework of Ways of Learning and Knowing (Look, Listen, Learn, Live); Songideewin is an Off-Campus program for students in Grades 8 to 12, in partnership with Children of the Earth High School. Industrial Arts and Home Economics programming is offered to Grades 7 and 8 students from Niji Mahkwa School and other Division feeder-schools. Extra-curricular activities and programs include Pow-Wow , Boys Drumming, Hoop Dancing, Math Mania, Elder & Youth Sharing Circles, volunteering and community service at Kekinan Seniors Home, Video Production, Anamichigaywin Club, Moose Hide and Beading projects, Sports Teams, Kitchen Brigades, Homework Club, and opportunities for students to attend Tim Hortons Camp.

Niji Mahkwa School and the community work together to nurture students self-esteem, to promote the Seven Teachings and to empower family, extended family, elders and community as participants in education. The school has a Community Support Worker who assists in developing and strengthening links between the parents and community. Parents are encouraged to be active in developing and sustaining a parent group or parent council. The school provides breakfast, lunch and snack programs. It is the school and communitys Vision Statement to uphold the belief that all children have an inherent right to the highest quality of holistic education.

The principal is assisted in the administration of the school by a teaching vice-principal.

Qualifications : Consideration will be given to applicants who have demonstrated the following qualifications and characteristics: Successful teaching and administrative experience in the Early Years and Middle Years;LEADERSHIP and MANAGEMENT A leader who is at the forefront of educational issues, knowledgeable about curricula, ability to articulate a clear educational vision and holds high expectations for student success;

High standards for academic excellence, including leading literacy and numeracy priorities based on student learning trends;

Encourages celebration of learning while supporting the arts, physical education and STEM programing;

Supports a school wide approach to discipline and responds to behavioral issues in a fair, consistent and timely manner with appropriate follow-up with staff, students and parents;

Displays strong leadership, organizational and management skills and follows the WSD decision making policies andprotocols;

Has experience in facilities management, record keeping and financial management;

Implements an organizational structure that reflects the schools mission statement, goals and plan and the WSD Strategic Plan.INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM Has a proven track record in decolonizing schools and answering the Calls to Action, specifically 6-12.

Has a proven track record of education leadership predicated on moving teacher practice forward through formative feedback, including all learners in school life, and ensuring learners and families who need supports are able to access them;

Has a deep understanding of Middle Years philosophy and experience supporting Middle Years education;

Has strong processes for implementing and monitoring curriculum and student assessment;

Promotes instructional practice that is consistent with WSD Principles of Learning, child development, effective pedagogy and the needs of each student;

Has experience with inclusive programming with a clear understanding of, and commitment to, inclusion ofstudents with additional needs; understands Response To Intervention;

Identifies and develops programs in consultation with staff to meet diverse learning needs of students;

Willingness to continue and strengthen the teacher collaboration and planning support models including Professional Learning Communities;

Uses data driven decision making to monitor and support student growth and teacher learning;

Values and supports strong co-curricular and extracurricular programs.PERSONNEL Encourages staff to be innovative and risk-taking, supports ongoing professional growth and provides opportunities for developing leadership skills;

Experience andunderstanding of the WSD hiring practices and supervision of teaching and support staff;

Leads the process for performance assessments of all staff in a timely manner following the established criteria of each employee group.COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIPS Fosters an atmosphere of openness and an environment in which trust and mutual respect are evident;

Promotes and values welcoming safe and caring schools;
